Abstract
In math, graphing means drawing a picture of an equation or a function on a coordinate plane. [1, 2] The Cartesian Coordinate Plane • Axes: The horizontal line is the x-axis and the vertical line is the y-axis. • Origin: The center point where the axes cross is (0, 0). • Ordered Pairs: Points are written as (x, y). Move left/right for \(x\), then up/down for \(y\). [1, 2] Common Types of Graphs • Linear (\(y = mx + c\)): A straight line where \(m\) is the slope and \(c\) is the y-intercept. • Quadratic (\(y = x^2\)): A U-shaped curve called a parabola with a turning point called the vertex. • Cubic (\(y = x^3\)): A curve with a distinct twist and two turning points. • Exponential (\(y = b^x\)): A curve that grows or decays very quickly. • Circle (\(x^2 + y^2 = r^2\)): A round shape centered at the origin with radius \(r\). [1, 2, 3, 4] You can plot and explore functions easily using digital tools like the Graphing Calculator - Desmos or the GeoGebra Graphing Calculator.
