Abstract
IoT and cloud security involves protecting connected devices, data transfer channels, and centralized cloud platforms from cyber threats and unauthorized access. [1, 2, 3] Key Differences: Cloud Security vs. IoT Security • Cloud Security: Focuses on protecting centrally hosted servers, shared platforms, multi-tenant boundaries, and control-plane configurations. [1, 2] • IoT Security: Focuses on protecting distributed physical hardware, constrained processing power, firmware integrity, and local network entry points. [1, 2] Core Security Risks • IoT Vulnerabilities: Resource limits, default credentials, unpatched software, and physical tampering. [1] • Cloud Vulnerabilities: Virtualization flaws, hypervisor attacks, insecure APIs, and configuration drift. [1, 2] • Data Transit Risks: Eavesdropping and data injection during communication between edge devices and the cloud. [1, 2, 3] Best Practices and Solutions • Device Authentication: Use unique device identities, X.509 certificates, or SIM-based authentication. [1, 2, 3] • Encryption: Encrypt data both in transit (using TLS/DTLS) and at rest in cloud storage. [1, 2, 3] • Firmware Management: Perform regular static/dynamic code analysis, secure boot processes, and automated patching. [1, 2] • Access Control: Enforce Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and network firewalls or intrusion detection systems
