Abstract
Global warming is the long-term rise in Earth's average surface temperature caused primarily by human activities like burning fossil fuels. [1, 2] Key Definition & Facts • Temperature Rise: Earth's average global temperature has increased by about 1°C (1.8°F) since the pre-industrial period. • Current Rate: The warming rate has more than doubled in recent decades, rising over 0.2°C per decade since 1981. • Greenhouse Effect: Burning coal, oil, and natural gas releases carbon dioxide and methane that trap heat in the lower atmosphere. • Global Target: The Paris Agreement aims to limit warming to well below 2°C, ideally 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels
