Abstract
Biochemical and microbiologically influenced corrosion inhibition (MICI) uses biological agents, microbial metabolism, or green organic compounds to protect metal surfaces from degradation. Key Biochemical Inhibition Processes • Consumption of Corrosive Agents • Beneficial microorganisms (such as oxygen-reducing or nitrate-reducing bacteria) consume dissolved oxygen or corrosive ions in the environment before they reach the metal. • Nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB) outcompete and suppress harmful sulfatereducing bacteria (SRB), which normally produce corrosive hydrogen sulfide.
Keywords: biochemical, corrosion, inhibition, metal, bacteria
